Jamison comments on the purpose of the poem and characterizes it as a response to the process of marital exchange:â€Å"Early Germanic women had, in fact, a number of possible responses to marital exchanges and could find ways to move well beyond the role of object, asserting their influence as mothers and diplomats by king-making, or king-breaking, in their new husbands homes.†(Jamison, 31)To regard The Wife’s Lament as a response to demeaning exchanges and as a means to â€Å"move beyond the role of object,† significantly changes the connotation of the lamenting language used to convey it; instead, it would be more appropriate to connote the language as that of ‘complaint’. The speaker is not aggressive in adopting a role as a ‘diplomat’, however, it is evident that she is in favor of her husband bearing a burden identical to her own.In respect to the contents of the narrative, it is equally important, if not more necessary to understand the function of female speech in general. By speaking, the wife is undertaking an action that was rarely allowed to women; the act of writing a ‘song’ of her experience further enables the female figure to independence in political unions. Barrie Ruth Straus in her essay,  "Womens Words as Weapons: Speech as Action in The Wifes Lament†, interprets the poem as a form of speech-act. She asserts at the beginning:The concept of the illocutionary act is introduced to make precise the way that the same proposition can be used differently—to make an assertion, to ask a question, to give an order, to express a wish, and so forth—depending on the situation.†(Straus, 269)Straus’s adoption of the â€Å"illocutionary act† in determining purpose and meaning in the poem elevates the precedence of female language in Anglo-Saxon culture. By apply this concept to the narrative, it becomes apparent that the speaker’s intention advances beyond that of expressing mere sadness. Straus’s argument can be characterized by the following passage:â€Å"The way the wife tells her story—that is, the way she uses words—reveals that she does not merely passively accept her fate, but rather takes advantage of a for m of action available to women of her time.†(Straus, 270)Straus places countenance in the form over the content of the poem. She is conscious that the speaker’s intentions are precisely that, ‘speaking out’, and promoting an empowering message for women through her unfortunate demise. In returning to the beginning lines of the poem, Straus’s proposal is also relevant:â€Å"The presence of a marked overt performative at the beginning of The Wifes Lament, then, indicates the speakers attempt to make her listeners understand her deliberate act of making an assertion.†(Straus, 272)However, the bulk of the speaker’s frustration and desire for independence occurs in the concluding lines:â€Å"Let to himselfall his worldly joys belong! let him be outlawedin a far distant land†¦My beloved will sufferthe cares of a sorrowful mind; he will remembertoo often a happier home. The wife’s initial longing transitions into a longing for her husband’s exile, which translates to the wife’s inclination for equal treatment. Her narrative does not blatantly ask for liberation; instead, the speaker wishes for equal sorrow on her husband, which, in terms of speech acting, infuses the female voice with authority. Straus concludes her exposition by stating: â€Å"The speaker has shown that she can do more than weep. She can still use words to make her story and its causes known. Thus she takes action by not suffering in silence.†(Straus, 275)The Wife’s Lament, though ambiguous in purpose and intention, enacts a performance of the oppression that women experience in marital exchanges and political strife. Anglo-Saxon literature and culture was fundamentally supported by the pat riarchy and masculine topics, even those that are inherently female, such as feminine romance. The poem examined functions as more than a sorrowful lyric or an elegy for longing; the ambiguity that overwhelms the poem and confuses critics even in contemporary scholarship, was conceivably a universal message for women. The ambiguity allows for multiple interpretations and the possibility for a title that better articulates the want for independence associated with feminine romance. Perhaps a more appropriate title for the poem is â€Å"The Wife’s Complaint†, since in the beginning lines she proclaims it her mission to speak for herself and her own sorrows, and in the concluding lines curses her male counterpart for his neglect. A plasmid was used on E. coli and with the use of heat shock, was inherited by the bacteria which caused the E. coli to become resistant to ampicillin. Also in the plasmid was GFP which verified the hypothesis by glowing green under UV light. The predicted outcome held true and gives insight on what the future of medicine might hold. Introduction: Transforming DNA on bacteria will require a change in their genes. Using pGLO in this experiment allowed the DNA on Escherichia coli (E. coli) to transform. There are three genes in this plasmid: the araC gene, green fluorescent protein gene (GFP), and the bla gene. The ara C gene is a bifunctional regulator which transcripts araC mRNA which translates to produce araC proteins that act as a depressor or promoter to the GFP. The GFP also transcripts to produce GFP mRNA which translated to produce GFP that glows green under ultraviolet light (UV light). The last gene is the bla gene which gives the bacteria ampicillin resistance. E. Coli was used in this experiment because it is found inside our bodies so it is not very harmful to humans and grows rapidly. Bacteria transformation is the process by which foreign DNA is introduced into a cell (addgene.org). Using plasmids, A linear or circular double-stranded DNA that is capable of replicating independently of the chromosomal DNA(biolog y-online.org), transformation is able to occur. Using heat shock, most of the bacteria accepts the foreign DNA and incorporates it into its own DNA. In this experiment E. coli was transformed to become resistant to the antibiotic ampicillin and expressed the GFP. Using heat shock and pGLO will transform E. coli to be resistant to ampicillin while glowing green. These results could help transform human DNA genes and give resistance to life-threatening diseases such as AIDS. Methods and Materials: Two micro test tubes were labeled +pGLO and the other –pGLO. Using a sterile transfer pipette, 250Â µL of transformation solution (CaCl2) were transferred to each test tube. The test tubes were placed in a bucket of ice for 3 minutes. A single colony of E. coli was placed in the transformation solution (CaCl2) of the test tube labeled +pGLO with a sterile loop and spun until the colony was all the way in the transformation solution. The same was done for the test tube labeled –pGLO. After, both test tubes were placed back in the bucket of ice for another 3 minutes. A new sterile loop was used to transfer pGLO Plasmid DNA to the test tube labeled +pGLO, not –pGLO. The test tubes were then back in the ice bucket for 10 minutes. While the test tubes were in the ice, the agar plates were gathered and labeled with the plate type and group name. After 10 minutes of the test tubes being in ice, they were both transferred to a water bath set at 42Â °C for 50 seconds. After 50 seconds the test tubes were placed back in the ice bucket for 2 minutes. Taking both test tubes out, a sterile pipette was used to pipette 250Â µL of LB nutrient broth into a test tube then mixed well. The same procedure was done to the other test tube using a new sterile pipette. Once both were mixed, they were incubated at room temperature for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes are done and using a new sterile pipette for each tube, 100Â µL of the transformation and control suspensions were transferred to the corresponding agar plates. Using a new sterile loop for each plate, the suspensions were evenly spread around the surface of the LB nutrient on each plate. The plates were stacked, labeled with a group name, and placed upside down in a fridge at 37Â °C until next week. In the plate labeled ‘+pGLO, LB, AMP, ARA’ there was growth when normally the ampicillin would kill of the bacteria, as shown in the plate labeled ‘-pGLO, LB, AMP’. Also looking at the UV Light figure, the same plate was able to glow as a cause of inheriting the GFP and being in the presence of arabinose sugar. In the plate labeled ‘-pGLO, LB’ there should be bacterial growth, but there is none present. This could be a possible error in not transferring a big enough colony of E. coli. The plate labeled ‘+pGLO, LB, ARA’ should have more distinct colonies glowing however on the UV Light figure only a film is seen glowing. This could be a cause of putting too much pressure on the colony when spreading the E. coli on the plate. Consider the chaos if we inverted their intended meaning, remove the word ‘not’, and apply ‘Thou Shall Kill’ or ‘Thou Shall Commit Adultery’, as new commandments. Would these new commandments conflict with natural laws of morality? The story by Andre Dubus, â€Å"Killings†, and Anton Chekhov, â€Å"The Lady with the Pet Dog†, show alienation as a horrible consequence we can suffer when a moral law is broken. In the story, â€Å"Killings†, Dubus reveals in detail, the alienation Matt and Ruth experience after Matt executes the revenge murder. In Chekhov’s story of â€Å"The Lady with the Pet Dog†, Anna and her lover, Dmitri, become familiar with alienation after they begin their extra-marital affair. The stories are completely different, however, the authors carefully guide us on a journey into brokenness and deep sadness, only to witness a deeper tragedy of self-imposed imprisonment: Alienation. Alienation caused by grave wrongdoing. Dubus and Chekhov give us insight to the effects of breaking a moral law by directly showing us how we can be impacted when we commit murder or commit adultery. Breaking moral law is shown to alienate us in ways we may not straightforwardly anticipate. In both stories, the protagonists are alienated from any notion of a supreme being. This is shown extensively through setting, tone, and action showing how the protagonist hide from their surroundings, especially from the events that are occurring or are about to occur. In â€Å"Killings†, Matt’s alienation from a supreme being begins within him at the time he begins to carry a gun, a gun that he must conceal, else face possible prison time. Matt’s friend Willis points this out when he asks, â€Å"You got a permit?†, when Matt responds that he doesn’t, then Willis seems to warn Matt, â€Å"†¦ you could get a year for that† (85), directly pointing out to him he’s breaking a law. Matt knows that for, â€Å"He had always been a fearful father† (88), and even though he still demonstrates a respect for nature and a love for his family, he now behaves indifferently about the potential consequences.

Computerized Teachers Evaluation System

With the long history of Chinese civilization and education, formal teacher practice is quite new because for century’s teachers’ authority and power over their students cannot be challenged. Historically, learning was the major concern of education, but during the past decades, teaching quality has become an added concern of education. There are three reasons for evaluating teachers: to diagnose and help teacher improve teaching, to help students get better teaching quality and to provide a criteria for research on teaching itself. Efforts have been made by government and educators to improve teaching quality in theory and practice. Verities of book have introduced foreign evaluation theories and many articles have contributed to the theoretical and practical improvement of Chinese teacher evaluation system. However, there is no systematic record of the development of teacher evaluation process. Therefore, exploration into the development of teacher evaluation, its reform and problem become necessary and significant. In common, teachers are evaluated by students and administrators synthetically. The students’ evaluations are used as formation to help teachers improve their classroom training and activities, in–service students complete these evaluations at the end of their program, while pre-service students complete these evaluations each semester. With both single-choice and open-end questions, these evaluations are similar to all colleges. These evaluations by students are analyzed, and teachers are given a copy of the analysis, if several students make similar complaints about a teacher or about the way of course in taught, the teacher in question gets immediate feedback from his or her supervisor. The administrative evaluations are completed by the supervisor who is the training manager. These evaluations are done every semester. Statement of the Problem This study of the proposed â€Å"Computerized Teachers Evaluation System† (CTES) covers method, procedures and problems which correlate to the teacher’s evaluation. The main problem of this study is how to design, develop and implement a Computerized Teachers Evaluation System. The current system is not efficient to ensure its validity because these CTES are done manually. Specifically this study aims to answer the following common problems encountered during and after the evaluation: 1. Is there a need for computerized teachers evaluation system? 2. What are the common problems encountered during and after the evaluation? 3. What are the users expectation regarding computerized teachers evaluation? 4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using computerized teachers evaluation system?
